This space has been dormant for quite some time. Don't write much now that we have all been sucked into the Facebook web silo. Saw they were going to cut this off if I didn't renew it so here is a quick post. We now return you to whatever you were doing before.

Anyone else out there play by ear? Do you see it as the same general process as learning your native language?

Welcome to Seattleguitarman's blog. I'm a blog newbie so forgive my blog blunders.
I've been passionate about music for decades. Much of my early musical influences were shaped by commercial radio, filtering what I heard and didn't hear.
Over the years I've wondered what it is that music is "for" in our lives, beyond what is sold to us via mainstream media. Why do all cultures have music? Why do some have passive recipients of music while in other cultures, everybody takes part?
I'll also expand upon my experiences of 30 years of playing guitar, mostly of the self-taught realm. On that path, in short, it has been similar to what I imagine we do to learn our native language...hearing and mimicking what we think we hear, until our skill at listening and replicating sounds advances to a high level.
